Nishi Hongwan-ji Temple
The head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha sect, founded by Shinran Shonin in the mid-Kamakura period. Its National Treasure, the Karamon Gate, is said to be a remnant of Fushimi Castle and is a representative example of Momoyama-period architecture. So captivating is its magnificent appearance that it is also known as the “Higurashi-no-mon” (Gate of the Setting Sun), as one could spend all day admiring it until dusk.
